Structure
The earth is surrounded by the atmosphere, which is 300 km in thickness but has most of the gases concentrating in its lower layer less than 15 km from the earth surface. The crust of the earth is the rocky strata on which we live. It is only 32km thick and taking up a very small portion of the earth's radius. Below the crust is the mantle, a layer with a thickness of 3000 km made of lava and rocks. Further below is the outer core of the earth made up of melten iron and nickel, the elements that give the earth its magnatic field. Down in the centre of the earth is the inner core made up of solid iron and nickel, whose solid form is a result of the tremendous pressure in the earth centre. It has a high temperature of more than 6000 degrees.
