Base on the information that you have given, I can tell you that your doctor is right. You are anemic. The normal result varies from laboratory to laboratory, but the ranges are about the same. These are the normal ranges I refer to in Canada.

MCV: 80-100 um^3
MCH: 27-31 pg/cell
RBC: 4.6-6.2 x 10^6 cells/uL (male), 4.2-5.9 x 10^6 cells/uL (female)
Hemoglobin: 13-18 g/dL (male), 12-16 g/dL (female)

Thalassemia is a genetic blood disorder. That means it is something that you can prevent. It is something that your parent(s) have passed on to you. Your parent(s) may be carrier of the disorder. He/she may not show signs of the disorder but for sure he/she have it in his/her genes. The problem with thalassemia is your body is not producing enough protein (alpha and beta) to produce an efficient amount of hemoglobin. So taking iron pills will not help and please do not take any iron supplement without your doctor’s advice. Iron is not a water-soluble minerals, thus it will accumulate in the body and cause harm if overtaken. There two types of thalassmia: alpha thalassemia and beta thalassemia. Treatments will depend on which type you have. Generally eating a healthy meal with appropriate exercise will do you many goods to boost up your energy.
