While plastic bags give us convenience, they also bring us pollution. According to the Environmental Protection Department, Hong Kong people "produce" 17000 tonnes of solid wastes every day, among which are 33 million plastic bags, averaging 5 per person. The stunning amount is eating up Hong Kong's landfills. Also, as plastic bags are not biodegradable, the damage to our environment is huge. To relieve the pressure, local environmental groups organised the No Plastic Bag Day, but plastic bag usage still is not under control. Thus the government proposed the legislation of plastic bag tax of $0.5 per bag this year in order to deter using them and arouse social awareness towards environmental protection. It also makes us think about how we can effectively cut down on using these plastic bags, which harm our environment.
Environmentalists pointed out that plastic bags are terrible because of its toughness. However we try to destroy them, whether we shred, bury or burn them, they simple will not disappear and may not be decomposed after hundreds of years. Plastic bags cause many damages to the environment. Should these air-proof, hard-to-decompose substances get into drains, the drains can be blocked, and water accumulation and flooding may occur, causing hygiene problems. In the sea or river, plastic bags can cause danger to the ecosystem or even death to thousands of fish, birds and marine mammals. Burning them is not a smart way either, as carcinogenic substances will be released which damage our health and pollute the air.
