Ionic equation is a form of chemical equation.
A chemical equation is the symbolic representation of a chemical reaction (chemical change). The formulae of all reactants are written on the left side, and the formulae of all products are written on the right side. The reactants are separated by 「+」 signs, and so are the products. The reactants and products are separated by a single arrow (→) which is read as 「change to」. There are two forms of chemical equations: full equations and ionic equations.
The first one is called 「full equation」, in which all the reactants and products are represented by their full formulae. For example, the reaction of magnesium (Mg) with dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl) gives magnesium chloride (solution) and hydrogen gas (H2). The full equation is written as:
Mg(s) + 2HCl(aq) → MgCl2(aq) + H2(g)
The second one is called 「ionic equation」, in which all aqueous ionic species (usually the aqueous acids and aqueous ionic compounds) are written in ionic forms. Refer to the above example. Dilute hydrochloric acid exists as H+(aq) and Cl-(aq) ions and magnesium chloride solution exists as Mg2+(aq) and 2Cl-(aq) ions. Therefore, the ionic equation is written as:
Mg(s) + 2H+(aq) + 2Cl-(aq) → Mg2+(aq) + 2Cl-(aq) + H2(g)
The dummy ion(s) (i.e. Cl- ion), which appear(s) on both sides of the equation, can be cancelled. The ionic equation is therefore usually written as:
Mg(s) + 2H+(aq) → Mg2+(aq) + H2(g)
