Maths help (again)?

Ok this type of question always comes up and I can't get my (small) brain round it - please, please, if anyone could help:

A rectangle tray has length 60cm, width 40cm, and depth 2cm.

It is full of water.

The water is poured into an empty cylinder of diameter 8cm.

Calculate the DEPTH of water in the cylinder.

Any ideas??? xxx

interesting

if you work out the volume of the tray

60 * 40 * 2 = 4800cm3

now you need to calculate the height or the amount of liquid in the cylinder

next part work out the area of the cylinder

^ this symbol means the power of r^2 is 4 squared
so in this example 4 ^2 is 4*4

PIr^2*h

PI = 3.142 approx
h = height (this is unknown)
the radius is half the diameter
diameter / 2 = radius

calculate the height

3.142 * 4^2 h

so we have 50.272 h.

the reason we need to work out h is when the water is poured into the cylinder we want to know the height of the liquid in the cylinder

we know the amount of liquid poured into the cylinder is 4800cm3

so therefore h is 4800/50.272 = h

h = 95.48cm

so the depth of liquid in the cylinder is 95.48 cm

if your curious you can also work out the amount of water that is poured into that cylinder

1000 cm3 is 1l

so

4800cm^3/1000cm^3 = 4.8 litres
hope this helped
also dont underrate yourself
I am sure you have a good brain you just need to practice these sorts of question and build up confidence

60 x 40 x 2
= 4800

x = depth of water in the cylinder

3.14x(8/2)^2 = 4800
3.14x(16) = 4800
3.14x = 4800/16
3.14x = 300
x = 300/3.14
x = 95.5414......

∴ the depth of water in the cylinder is about 95.5414 cm.

v=60*40*2=4800

(cylinder)v=pi*r^2*h=4800 pi*4^2*h=4800 (r=8/2=4)

16pi*h=4800 h=4800/16pi=95.49

first calculate the length, bredth and debth

then you can easily calculte th edebth in cylinder

you have to compare the two relevant formulas for volume.

the rectangular L*W*D
and cylindrical pi*r^2*h

Just remember you were given the diameter which is 2r
and h is the only unknown which you can calculate by equating the two volumes.

60*40*2/(16pi) cm
Now calculate this at least.
