１）
學英文雖然有時要死記，但若能明白其理，學英文就會容易得多
你的句子的for是介詞(preposition)，跟著介詞的，必須是名詞，動名詞，或名詞相等語，如：
This letter is for you.（you是名詞）
He left us without a word.（word是名詞）
He entered without knocking at the door.(knocking是動名詞）
所以，responsible for paying the rates.要用paying而不用pay.
２）
between是兩者之間，我們可以用線來想像，一條線兩點之間的一點（時間等也可以想像是一條時間線）
如：They planted a lot of trees between the two buildings（他們在兩座建築物之間栽了許多樹。）
　　These books were written between 1736 and 1770.（這些書寫於一七三六至一七七零年之間。）
而among的意思是，在其中，可以用平面來想像。如：
I saw a few familiar faces among the crowd.(在人群中，我看到一些熟悉的面口）
Rescue teams searched among the wreckage for survivors（搜救隊在殘骸中搜尋生還者）

among :在...之中;在...中間
