Simplest form is also sometimes called 'reducing' fractions or 'lowest terms'. There are a few ways to do this...but the better you know your multiplication facts, the easier this will be!
What you are looking for are FACTORS (or the multiplication facts that make up that number) that the numerator and denominator share in common. The largest one they share in common is the best one to use because you will be able to find simplest form in one step...but you can use other common factors too (you'll just have to do it more than once!.
Once you find the largest factor they have in common (your textbook probably says to look for the GCF), you will divide both the numerator and denominator by that number.
So let's take an example...How about 18/24. IF you list the factors of each number....(oh yeah...remember, factors come in pairs...that way you won't forget some.)
12: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 12
18: 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, 18
As you can see, the biggest factor they have in common is 6.
IF you divide 12 by 6 and 18 by 6, you would get 2/3. Bam...12/18 in simplest form is 2/3.
To understand what this is actually doing...Imagine a pizza cut into 12 pieces. You eat 3. You are still eating 1/4 of the pizza (same amount of stuff but LESS pieces). All simplest form does is try to find the LEAST amount of pieces but NOT change the AMOUNT. Hope this helps!
