Merlot is full of fruity and flowery flavor. Also, the tannin is not as strong as the other grapes such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Shiraz. So, it gives you an impression that the Merlot wines is easier to drink. In fact, you prefer lighter wines, Pinot Noir is also a good choice for you. However, sometimes the Pinot Noir may be too sour. But the peachy flavor in this wine make it very unique than the other wines. You can try with the Pinot Noir from New Zealand or California. Of course, in Burgundy of France , you can also fin the wine from Pinot Noir but the price is much more expensive if you are looking for good one.
In red wine, it is seldom to mention whether it is sweet or not. I champagne or sparkling wines, you may sometimes find the wine with the words " sec" or "brut" which means "sweet" and "dry" respectively.
If you prefer sweet wine, you can try German white wine such as Auslese or Trockenbeerenauslese, ice wine from Canada, Tokaii from Hungary or Sauternes from Frances. They are all very sweet. If for red wine, it is not easy to find sweet red wine, but you can try with Port which is quite sweet.

Merlot is easier to drink than Shiraz, of course, but for me Pinot Noir is even easier to drink, smoother. Actually, White wines go well with our
Chinese food (I grew up in Hongkong). Like Riesling, it goes so well with
our Steam type of Chinese food or dimsum.
Australia s merlot is always quite nice.
Whether it is dry or sweet, it depends on the type of grape; type of grapes is merlot, shiraz, pinotnoir....
Hope no one objects to what I said
