1) On a comet the typical events are rather boring, it travels at high speed around the sun in an elliptical orbit than take many years to complete and it releases material when it gets close enough to the sun to be heated , if it does not collide with a body in space it will eventually fade away.
2) Other than what I have described above, a comet has no function.

think of of the solar's gravity as a results of fact the source of skill for the comet's action. while this is closer to the source, it is going quicker. The analogy isn't appropriate, yet in a feeling it is rather real, yet over-simplified.
