I had an asian roommate, insisted on "washing" --- actually just rinsing, the rice, in a bowl, pour water over the rice swirl it around to rince out the microscopic rice-dust, and empty out that "dirty" water, and repeat the process a couple times. Also, there are different kinds of rice, I've had some great long-grain ones and some great short-grain ones, and some are glutinous rice (a little bit sticky), and some are "Jasimine scented", its flavour from a flower that they use for tea, but its already on the rice. I'd recommend to NOT use bleached rice, its less healthy, and maybe less flavourful. Oh, and they probably don't use instant or "one-minute" rice.

Indians use Basmati rice, it's a fragrant long grain rice. Another very fragrant rice is Jasmine rice. Always use a 2:1 ratio of 1 part rice to 2 parts water.

It might be the brand of rice you're using or the amount of water you put into the rice cooker

Buy Jasmine long or medium grain rice. If you want it sweeter,, sprinkle some sugar on when serving. (just a little at first, so it's not obviously sugar).

I love both cuisines, but head to head, I give the rice battle to Asian. I've had all kinds of Mexican rice, as "authentic" as it comes, and as canned. Somehow, despite the sauces and veggies, the best Mexican rice has virtually no flavor, whereas even plain Asian rice is loaded with flavor. Go figure.

It depends on the type of rice you use and they wash it until the starch washes off.

im asian and i think that its because of the rice that people eat. "american" rice is long and dry and doesnt stick much, but asian rice is sticky and moist.

to people who say that asians bleach their rice, its not true. u can't bleach rice and eat it at home.. its discusting.

if your having trouble finding "asian" rice, go to a nearby korean or japanese market and ask for some white rice. :D

does that help?

I've switched from regular long grain rice to jasmine rice. I cook it in a rice steamer and it's just like the steamed rice in the restaurants. If you want it sticking together, don't rinse the rice, and don't add any oil or butter to the rice. If you want it a bit fluffier, rinse some of the starch off the rice before cooking it. I don't even add salt to the water.
