1. The Water Supplies Authority, which was the predecessor of the present-day Water Supplies Department, was established in 1902. The name of the office was changed to Water Supplies Department after the handover in 1997.
2. The construction work of Pok Fu Lam Reservior, the first reservior of Hong Kong, was completed in 1863.
In 1963, due to water shortage, strict water rationing was adopted. At its worst, people only got 4 hours of water supply for every 4 days.
3. It is natural to have aqualtic life in reservoirs for water storage as in other natural waters. It is not out of the human's intention to keep them there and here is no point removing them from the water. The department keeps regular testing and observation of life forms in the reservoirs for the maintenance of water quality.
