You could try booting in Safe Mode which should give a resolution of 800 x 600. In Display Properties > Settings tab - Apply this Resolution & reboot normally. This should give the resolution of 800 x 600 this time using your graphics card drivers. Go back to Display Properties > Settings tab & adjust the Screen Resolution to that appropriate for the monitor. Also Advanced button > Monitor tab & adjust Refresh Rate for your monitor.
