x + y = 14
x = 6y

Put the second equation into the first:
6y + y = 14
7y = 14
y = 14/7 = 2
x = 6y = 6(2) = 12

7y = 14
y = 2
x = 12

You have to solve for Y by using substitution. I'll number each equation to make it easier.

equation 1: x + y = 14
equation 2: x = 6y

So since equation 2 tells us that x = 6y, we can substitute that into equation one (by replacing x with 6y in equation 1) ..like this:

(6y) + y = 14

now if we add 6y + y, we get 7y. so equation 1 now looks like this:

7y = 14

now all we need to do is divide 14 by 7 and solve for y:

y = 14/7
y = 2

on a further note, now that we have solved y, we can use it to solve for x, and prove that our answers are correct:

x = 6y
x = 6(2) ..(i just replaced y with 2 since we just solved y)
x = 12 ..now we multiply 6 by 2 and get 12

so now we know that y = 2 and x = 12, watch this:

x + y = 14
12 + 2 = 14

everything adds up so the answer is correct.

x + y = 14
x = 14 - y

x = 6y
14 - y = 6y
-6y - y = -14
-7y = -14
y = -14/-7
y = 14/7
y = 2

x + y = 14
x + 2 = 14
x = 14 - 2
x = 12

∴ x = 12 , y = 2

x=6y

6y+y=14
7y=14
y=14/7
7=2

this is a simultaneous equation
x+y=14 this is equation 1
x=6y this is equation 2
put x=6y into equation 1
6y+y=14
7y=14
y=2
if y=2, x=6(2)
y=12
2008-05-06 8:51 pm
x+y=14
(replace the x with 6y)
6y+y=14
(combine like terms)
7y=14
(divide by 7 on both sides)
7y/7=14/7
(then u get...)
y=2

after that..plug in the 2 for y in the equation.
so if x=6y, and y=2... x=6(2)...and u get x=12.

y=2, x=12

6y + y = 14
7y = 14
y = 14/7 = 2
x = 6y x=12
