Safety ground.

In case there is a short between hot and the case of the appliance, the ground lead prevents a shock hazard.

It sends the used electrons to a water source so that they don't stay in the appliance or near it so that when you touch it, it won't spark you. It's a very good thing!

Jushin Liger -- the greatest high-flyer of all-time would reach in to his bag of tricks and just dazzle everybody. Bruiser Brody -- a brawl for the ages. Hansen doesn't have a size advantage in this one. Brody was the greatest brawler of all-time; Hansen arguably the second greatest. I've seen both of these guys many many times. Brody could take a tremendous amount of punishment and keep on fighting. Be a helluva fight but I think Brody would come out on top. The Great Muta -- Baba was just a big brawler (not to belittle him). Muta is one of the greatest of the Japanese superstars. As good a wrestler as anybody and the man can fight with the best of them. Muta takes this one with relative ease. Antonio Inoki -- not too familiar with Fujinami, but I've seen Inoki many times. I know he's good, so I'll choose him.

Jushin Liger vs Riki Choshu ---> Jushin Liger. Bruiser Brody vs Stan Hansen ---> Stan Hansen. Giant Baba vs The Great Muta ---> The Great Muta. Antonio Inoki vs Tatsumi "The Dragon" Fujinami ---> Antonio Inoki.

The round prong is physically connected to the case, or chassis, of the appliance. If a hot wire inside the device were to come in contact with the case, the current would be shorted to ground. So if you were to touch this device, nothing would happen. If the ground prong was not there, the current would find a path to ground through your body, and elecrocute you.

The white wire as mentioned earlier is actually the neutral line, and is coupled with ground.

Ami, I need to correct one of the comments made. I agree with Bilruss, but one other has made a bit of a mistake. The white lead, or the smaller of the 2 other connectors is in fact ground. If you looked inside of the power distribution box, you would see the white wires connected to ground. At a separate grounding point, you would see the green, or bare copper wires connected to ground as well. That round pin you ask about is connected to a green, or bare copper wire in the appliance cord. Eventually it connects with the other bare or green wires in the power distribution box. This double grounding is there for safety reasons. If the white wire opens up, there is still a safety ground, the bare or green wire to keep you from getting lit up from the hot wire. Ground through the wires is good, ground through you is very bad.

The round prong is "ground", meaning that it is electrically connect to the Earth. Its purpose is to prevent electric shock. It does that because electrical fixtures and appliances have exposed metal parts connected to the ground. When something is grounded, it cannot be at any voltage other than zero, relative to the ground. Most electric shocks occur when a person completes a circuit to ground.

It is an extra ground wire to keep you from getting shocked.Usually they are found on items that pull a lot of amps such as vacuum's, heaters etc.

It's the ground.

voltage and to ground it

it's a safe way out for excess electricity that could come in by the other two prongs

It's the ground plug and prevents surge or shock from damaging the appliance.
