ive got SATS tomorrow and im still having trouble with solving equations, although im good with quadratics.

this question is in a practice sats paper and i wonder if any1 can help me please.

9y + 3 = 5y + 13

also as a little request can someone help me through msn messenger with my revising please? =P

first bring all the y terms to left side and the numbers to the right.
that gives 9y-5y=13-3(he sign changes) (+ to - and * to /)
4y=10
y=10/4
y=5/2 or 2.5

ihope this helps......

9y + 3 = 5y + 13
9y - 5y = -3 + 13
4y = 10
y = 10/4
y = 5/2 (2.5)

9y + 3 = 5y +13
4y = 10
y = 10/4 or 5/2

Try to get the variable on one side of the equation. Subtract 5y from both sides:
4y + 3 = 13
Subtract 3 from both sides:
4y = 10
Divide both sides by 4:
y = 10/4
The answer!

9y + 3 = 5y + 13 can be wriiten as:
9y - 5y = 13 - 3, which gives:
4y = 10, and y = 2.5

The solution is 19! detailed how-to below: to make this easier, group the x's together with, of course, their +/- signs: 3x - 2x + 17 + 2 now this is an equation, and if you see no EQUAL SIGN (=), then you should assume that if there was, your whole equation should be equal to zero: 3x - 2x + 17 + 2 = 0 now simplify-- use simple subtraction when dealing with the variables (ignoring the x's, but remembering to put them in the result) this means that you should answer "3-2": 1x + 19 = 0 i got the 19 by adding 17 and 2. you now have a "1x", but you can remove the "1", because writing down just "x" really means "1x" x + 19 = 0 now to solve it, the variable should be on one side, and the known value on the other side. remember that if you take a number or a variable across the equal sign, you should ALWAYS change it's +/- sign! : x = -19 or 19 = -x now you have the solution! x is equal to "negative 19" or "-19" or you can read it as "negative x is equal to 19", which is the same thing. hope this was enough detail.

well.
9y + 3 = 5y + 13

so. you can move the 5y to the left hand side (LHS) and make it negative. And you can move the three to the RHS and make that negative. so you have:

9y-5y = 13-3
4y = 10
y = 10/4
y = 2.5

you can write that also as 2 and 1/4.
p.s. this has nothing to do with quadratics.

9y+3=5y+13
9y-5y=13-3
4y=10
y=10/4
y=2.5

9y - 5y = 13 - 3
4y = 10
y = 10/4
y = 5/2
2008-05-05 10:27 am
9y+3 = 5y+13
9y-5y = 13-3
4y = 10
y = 10/4
y = 2.5
