What is passive voice?

English verbs have two voices—active and passive.

Active verbs occur when the subject of the sentence performs the action of the sentence.

Passive voice is used when we want to focus attention on the person or thing affected by the action. We make the person or thing the subject of the sentence and use the passive voice:

Exmaples:

Active: The cat bit Nancy.

Passive: Nancy was bitten by the cat.




Active: Rosy gave Tammy a new watch as birthday gift.

Passive: Tammy was given a new watch as birthday gift by Rosy.

1. We use the passive voice to say what happens to the subject
Example: These clothes were designed by my brother.
2. When we do not know the doer of an action
The windows were broken.
