日本國（日文：日本国）是位於亞洲東部的一個島國，領土由北海道、本州、四國、九州四個大島和3000多個小島組成。周邊為鄂霍次克海、日本海、東中國海、菲律賓海、太平洋所包圍。隔海與俄羅斯聯邦、朝鮮民主主義人民共和國、大韓民國、中華人民共和國、中華民國（台灣）、菲律賓共和國相鄰。傳說中日本於公元前660年2月11日[1]建國。「日本」這個詞的意思是「朝陽升起的地方」。日語中「日本」一詞有多種假名寫法，最常用的是「にっぽん」（Nippon）和「にほん」（Nihon）。

日本是世界上的經濟大國，以國際匯率計算的話GDP總量位居世界第二，同時也是世界第四大出口國與第六大進口國。過去日本長期實施君主制，目前為君主立憲制國家。第二次世界大戰後頒布的日本國憲法是日本的最高規範，規定日本為一司法、行政、立法三權分立的法治國家。日本的國家理念為立憲主義、國民主權、基本人權的尊重、和平主義，以君主天皇作為日本國與日本國民的象徵。日本的人口超過1.2億，是世界人口數量第10大國。首都東京及周邊的數縣構成的首都圈居住了3000萬以上的人口，是世界最大的都市圈之一。

Japan (日本 Nihon or Nippon, officially 日本国 Nippon-kokuor Nihon-koku) is an island country in East Asia. Located in the Pacific Ocean, it lies to the east of China, Korea and Russia, stretching from the Sea of Okhotsk in the north to the East China Sea in the south. The characters that make up Japan’s name mean “sun-origin”, which is why Japan is sometimes identified as the “Land of the Rising Sun”.

Japan comprises over 3,000 islands, the largest of which are Honshū, Hokkaidō, Kyūshū and Shikoku, together accounting for 97% of its land area. Most of the islands are mountainous, many volcanic; for example, Japan’s highest peak, Mount Fuji, is a volcano. Japan has the world’s tenth largest population, with about 128 million people. The Greater Tokyo Area, which includes the capital city of Tokyo and several surrounding prefectures, is the largest metropolitan area in the world, with over 30 million residents.
