Okay, well since both of the denominators are x-5, you can "cancel them out" and multiply both sides by x-5. This removes both denominators.

However, the 1 on the left side isn't a fraction, so this needs to be multiplied by x -5.

You're left with the equation...

x - 5 + 10 = 2x

Now, just solve for x.

x + 5 = 2x
x = 5

Okay, now unless you didn't specify whether the 1 is over the x - 5, this answer is violates the restriction that x cannot equal 5 because you can't have 0's in denominators.

(4x-10) = (2)(x+5) (4x-10) = (2x+ 10) 4x - 2x -10 - 10= 0 2x - 20 = 0 2x = 20 x = 10

Do you mean :-
1 + 10 / (x - 5) = 2x / (x - 5)
Which IS NOT the equation you give?
If so :-
x - 5 + 10 = 2x
5 = x
You will receive different answers due to fact that question is badly presented.
I offer this as advice that may help you in future rather than criticism.

(1 + 10)/(x - 5) = 2x/(x - 5)
11/(x - 5) = 2x/(x - 5)
11 = 2x
x = 11/2 (5.5)
2008-05-03 4:35 pm
1+10/x-5=2x/x-5
1+10/x=2x/x-5+5
1+10(1/x)=2(x/x)
11-2=x/x-1/x
9=x/x-1/x
9=1/x-1/x-1/x
9=1/x
9*1=x
9=x

1+10/x-5 = 2x/x-5
c its v simple 1st v cross multiply lyk dis..
1+10 * x-5 = 2x * x-5
den v get
x -5 +10x-50 = 2xsq -10x
den v get
11x -55 =2xsq -10x
=> 2xsq -10x-11x+55= 0
now start grouping n taking common
v get
=>(2xsq-11x) (-10x+55) =0
now take common 4m d brackets
=>x(2x-11) -5(2x-11)=0
now v get
=>(x-5)(2x-11)=0
v can also write it as
either
x-5=0
=> x=5(as sign changes when v shift 4m lhs 2 rhs)
or
=>2x-11=0
=>2x=11
=>x=11/2 => x=5.5
hence either x = 5 or x =5.5 ans...

hey dude dis is corrct.. oders r doing it in a wrong manner....

(1 + 10) / (x - 5) = (2x) / (x - 5)
((11) / (x - 5)) * (x - 5) = ((2x) / (x - 5)) * (x - 5)
11 = 2x
11 / 2 = 2x / 2
5.5 = x

Check: (1 + 10) / (x - 5) = (2x) / (x - 5)
11 / 5.5 - 5 = 2(5.5) / 5.5 - 5
11 / .5 = 11 / .5
22 = 22

1+10/x-5=2x/x-5 Add 5 to both sides to get rid of 5s
1+10/x=2x/x Answer to 2x/x is always 2 Ex. 2(5)/5=2
Only 1+(10/10) would equal 2
Answer is x=10

You may want to check this for yourself, but from what I understand, this is correct. In your case you may need to change it due to a different order of operations.

1+10/(x-5) = 2x/(x-5)
Multiply whole eqn with (x-5)

x-5+10 = 2x
x=10-5
x = 5
But this is incorrect because the initial equation had (x-5) in the denominator, and if x = 5 you are dividing by zero.
So there are no solutions.

1+10/x-5=2x/x-5
1+10/x-5=2-5
10/x=-3-1+5
10/x=7
10=7x
1.43=x

:) I think this is correct.
