There were several new weapons first used in World War I, for example, , rifled artillery and hydraulic recoil mechanisms, zigzag trenches and machine guns, and their application had the effect of making it extremely difficult to cross defended ground. So the war led to a large number of casualties as the weapons had become more destructive in large scale, and also made the war "prolonged" as both sides found it difficult to advance or defeat the other side.

The War also involved poison gas, planes, submarines, and tanks. Women were in a large scale working hard in munition factories. All these made the WWI a total war. For more information you may refer to:
