票房在英文裡為「Box Office」，直譯的意思為「盒子辦公室」。這個詞來自於早期的戲院，要進入便宜的座位區需花費一個銅板，這個入場費是要放在位於入口閘門上一個鎖住的小箱子。當箱子滿了的時候，會有工作人員將箱子拿進一個小房間進行清點並收藏。因此這個財務部門相關的小房間就被稱為「盒子辦公室」（Box Office）。

It is also common that the distributor gets either a percentage of the gross revenue, or a higher percentage of the revenue after deducting the nut, whichever is larger.
