大不列顛及北愛爾蘭聯合王國 (United Kingdom of Great Britain and North Ireland), 是英國的全稱. 國土可分為四個部份

大不列顛島 -- 即英格蘭 (England), 蘇格蘭 (Scotland) 及威爾斯 (Wales)
北愛爾蘭 -- 即愛爾蘭島北部, 約佔全島六分一面積, 直接受英國政府統治的部份
殖民地 -- 例如直布羅陀等等
皇家領地 -- 例如人島 (Isles of Man) 等等
"英國" 人喜歡別人叫自己為 Britain 而不是 English. 這情況是有發生的. 但只是少數蘇格蘭和威爾斯人的想法. 他們其實和英格蘭人有點芥蒂. 例如足球比賽, 英格蘭對意大利, 蘇格蘭和威爾斯人會希望意大利取勝的.
長期以來, 人們以 England 或 English 作為稱呼英國 / 英國人的方法. 但卻引起少數蘇格蘭和威爾斯人的反感. "我不是英格蘭人, 為何要被稱作英格蘭人..." 但他們也知道別人難於明白 England, Scotland 和 Wales 的分別... 與其解釋, 所不如簡單一點直接稱呼自己作 "British" 也希望別人稱呼自己作 "British". 這樣能清楚表明他是英國人, 卻不是英格蘭人了.
如果你留意英文新聞報導. 英國官員永遠稱呼英國政府為 British Government, 而不是 English Government. 稱呼英國為 the UK (United Kingdom), 而不是 England. 這樣永遠政治正確, 而亦不會得失任何一個地區... 攪政治, 英國人永遠都是高手 !!!

I live in UK (London) so I would like to give a few comments about how british people call themselves.

For foreigners, epecially the Americans, they like to call people in the UK "English" and call this place England. You can always find this from the American soaps and films.

Within the country itself, people tend to indentify themsleves from their own regsions. People from Ireland call themslives Irish, pepole in scotland call themslves Soctish. I hear people in England call themsleves british more.

In newspaper, sometimes u see Britons. eg. Britons are the most obese in Europe.
Something included UK is called British: eg. British Governement, British Passport, British music. made in Britain
Something that is more specific in the own region: eg. David Beckham plays for England. English Tea.

我有看過維基的有関資料,可相信Britain是源自Briton而來,應該有所根據.

據知, 不列巔此名是來自此島的原居民: britons.
後來英格蘭人的祖先從歐洲大陸移居此島, 但卻長期未能把全島征服, 所以只能把他們自己征服的部分稱為英格蘭"ENGLAND", 而全個島, 由於還有蘇格蘭人, 威爾斯人存在, 當時誰也不服誰, 所以只好以原本原居民的名字命名全島, 稱為之Britain, 不列顛了.

要叫聯合王國(UK)先係至確準
不過由於以前係叫做大英帝國(British Empire)
所以你讀hist之類既科目都會以British稱之

而叫England既話,就更加著重咁指明係UK中最繁盛既英格蘭

因為不列顛係英文(Britain)的直譯，(以前英國是不與歐洲其他國家建立外交關係，英國人亦稱自己為「光榮孤立」。)我想他們無話喜歡外國人叫他們什麼，什麼也可以吧。
