Porcelain is within the whiteware ceramics categories.

Ceramic can be divided into 4 categories:

1. Structural - eg. bricks, floor tiles

2. Refractories - (not sure what examples i can give you, all i know is that this type of ceramic can withstand really really high temperatures.)

3. Whitewares - used for tablewares eg. plates, vases, etc.

4. Technical - (this is more like chemistry...) technical ceramics are oxides, non-oxides, and composites... very technical, I don't even want to get to much into it.

So the question is wrong, they don't have a difference, but instead, porcelain is actually a type of ceramics.
