Since it was nearly suppertime, the other kids went home while Sheriff Bloncheck dropped Dawn and Baylor and Sally off at the Proust house.
When Mrs.Proust came to the door,Baylor explained that they were fixing up Mr.Grsder's house and that the dog had been living there."Dawn has to find a temporary home for Sally,"Baylor said.He took a deep breath."Mom,could we just keep Dawn'dog until her mom gets out of the hospital?"Mrs.proust turned red." Dogs arw covered with fleas and ticks-and germs."I don't thing Sally has any of that stuff,"Dawn said. As far as she was con-cerned,Sally was perfect.Mrs. Proust wasnt'listening."And you can get allergies from dog hair,"she said. For a minute,it seemed Mrs.Proust was going to snatch Baylor inside and shut the door on Dawn and Sally. But the sheridd's truck had already pulled away.Mrs. Proust sighed. She certainly couldn't leave a child whose mother was in the hospital standing out in the snow."Come in,Dawn. The dog can stay tied up outside. Her coat looks quite thick."Dawn just kept pulling the dog into the
house.Dawn was shy.She would never go where she wasn't wanted. But it
hadn't occurred to her that someone might not want.Sally.She thought Sally
was the most wonderful dog in the world.
