1. The coordinate of M and N are (-10,-7) and (5,8) respectively. P is a point on MN extended such that MN:MP = 5:8. Find the coordinate of P.

2. A ship at A(163,0) is sinking and another ship at B(35,40) is on fire. Both ships send signals to ship P and Q for help. The positions of P and Q are (120,90) and (100,-36) respectively. Suppose the ships cloest to each other should go to the other's rescue, suggest which ship (P or Q) should go to A and which ship (P or Q) should go to B.

1.
x coordinate
=(5-(-10))/5*8 + (-10)
=14

y coordinate
=(8-(-7))/5*8 + (-7)
=17

ans=P(14,17)

2.
(AP + BQ) or (AQ + BP) greater?

(AP + BQ)
=root((163-120)^2 + 90^2) + root((100-35)^2 + (36+40)^2)
=200 (3 sig fig)

(AQ + BP)
=root((163-100)^2 + 36^2) + root((120-35)^2 + (90-40)^2)
=171 (3 sig fig)

so Q go to A, P go to B
