consider you have a pizza (seems to always be the acceptable illustration in math classrooms when talking about fractions).
if you wanted to see what 3/4 of that pizza was, you just mulitiply the 1 by 3/4, and you are left with 3/4 which is reasonable.
since you had a whole pizza, 3/4 of it is 3/4.
now if you only had 2/9 of that wonderful dish,
and you wanted to see 3/4 of that, you would take 3/4 of 2/9, which means 3/4 * 2/9
that is 3*2/4*9=6/36=1/6

A fraction of anything determines the number of parts of the whole. For example if you have 4 people, then 3/4 of the people will be 3, because it's 3 out of 4. With 8 people, 3/4 would be 6.

Now, with 3/4 of a fraction, like with your example, 3/4 of 2/9 just means the same thing - if you have 2 ninths of the whole thing, you then proceed to find 3 quarters of the 2 ninths. You could spend ages fiddling around with drawing shapes on squared paper to work this out, but it's much faster to do the following:

Just remember that 3/4 of a fraction is the same as 3/4 times that fraction. I'll show you, watch this:

You know that 1/2 of 6 is 3, right?, O.K., so watch what happens when we say 1/2 times 6 instead of of 6.

1/2 x 6/1

When multiplying fractions, multiply the two numerators, and then the two denominators as follows.

1x6 = 6, so 6 is the new numerator, and 2 x 1 is 2, so that's the new denominator, so you have

6/2 Now with fractions you can divide the bottom into the top without changing the value, so this gives 3. And that's the answer we got by finding 1/2 of 6. Now that I've proved that, let's turn to your example .......

3/4 of 2/9 is the same as 3/4 x 2/9

Now multiply 3 x 2, giving 6, and 4 x 9, giving 36.

So we have 6/36. We should now cancel down. Dividing top and bottom by 6 gives us 1/6, so the answer is one sixth.

Hope this helps. Good luck.

The "of" in the problem actually means what portion is 3/4 of 2/9 which is determined by multiplying the two fractions or numbers together and simplifying the answer or simplifying the equation then multiplying the fractions to get the answer. When you have fairly small number is does not matter in what order yo do the math but when you have large numbers it is easier to simplify the equation before you multiply because your unsimplified answer will be large and more difficult to work with.
15/20 x 10/45 = 150/900 = 1/6 or
15/20 x 10/45 = 1/2 x 1/3 = 1/6
It would be easier to factor the 15 and 45 and the 10 and 20 and then multiply than to multiply the large numbers and then try to reduce. you still get the same answer and there is less chance of making an error.

whenever there is an of, you multiply the fractions. 3/4*2/9=6/36 which is 1/6. so 3/4 of 2/9 is 1/6

You divide 2/9 by 3/4 so its the fraction of it.

of is the same as x : -
3/4 of 2/9 = 3/4 x 2/9 = 6/36 = 1/6
