Put it into the form of y = mx + b, where m = slope and b = y - intercept.

So it becomes:

x + 2y = 8
x + 2y - x = 8 - x
x - x + 2y = 8 - x
2y = 8 - x
2y/2 = (8 - x)/2
y = (8 - x)/2
y = 4 - ½x
y = -½x + 4

Therefore slope = m = -½ and y - intercept = b = 4
