1) Hundreds of soccer fans queued outside H.K. Stadium yesterday "in a bid for" tickets to see Los Angeles Galaxy Star David Beckham "show his stuff".

2) Hk Federation of Newspapers said that they are "in a bid for" stop the price war.

in a bid of 是新聞裡的常用語, 是 "意圖 xxxxxx" / "為了xxxxx" 的意思, 通常用作修飾語, 來說明某行為的目的. 第一句中文就可譯為:
數百球迷為了取得銀河隊賽事門票觀看巨星碧咸比賽, 在大球場外排隊買票.

show his stuff 是口語, 像中文的 "秀出本事來" / "表演本領"
