Argument for the increase of Old Age Allowance (OAA)
1. Prices are going up. OAA should be increased accordingly so that the recipients would not lose some of the purchasing power.
2. OAA is a gesture of respect of our community towards the old people, while a meager sum is not sufficent to convey this message.
Arguments against the increase of Old Age Allowance (OAA)
1. The government has never intended to support the living of the old people through the OAA system. The CSSA system is in place to provide support to the old people for their basic needs, while the OAA is more like an additional allowance. It is misplaced to argue that OAA should be kept up with rising prices. For better support of the old people, it is the CSSA system, not OOA, that needs review.
2. Increase in OAA may give the government an excuse not to review the CSSA level, that will hurt the interests of old people who depend on it.
