First we must apply rule that (- a) x (- a) = a ²
Thus :-
(- 1.1) x (- 1.1) = 1.1 ²

1.1² = 1.1 x 1.1 = 1.21

Check
__1.1
X 1.1
-------
__11
_11
-----
1.21

= - 1.1²
= - 1.1(- 1.1)
= 1.21

Answer: to get the square of - 1.1 is to multiply it by itself, thus, - 1.1² is - 1.1 * - 1.1 or 1.21.

just llike 11x11=121 inthe same way when we multiply two negatives it becomes a positive.this is the basic rule in maths.also,
-1.1x-1.1=11+110.hence 1.21

(-1.1) squared is just (-1.1) times (-1.1). When you look at the numbers without the negative signs and without the decimals it is just 11 times 11. Which is easy...121. Now, you have to account for the decimal. Since you have one in the first (-1.1), you need to move the decimal in your answer over one place to the left... 12.1. Then since you have the other (-1.1) to account for, you need to move the decimal one more time... 1.21. Then when ever you multiply two numbers with negative signs, it becomes a positive. Think Two negatives equal a positive. That's why your answer is positive.

Ok. Apparently, two negatives always make a positive in multiplication. and -1.1 squared is really -1.1 times -1.1

To get 1.21 you first multiply 1.1 by 1 which gives you 1.1
Then you multiply 1.1 by .1 (point one) which gives you .11
Then you add .11 to 1.1 which gives you 1.21
To put it another way (1.1 X 1)+(1.1 X .1) which gives you
1.1 + .11=1.21. Remember, two negatives make a positive in multiplying.

(-1.1)x (-1.1) = 1.21 Because minus x minus= plus
& 11/10 x 11/10 = 121/100 = 1.21
2008-04-10 6:45 pm
-1.1=-11/10
-11/10 X -11/10= (-)X(-)X(11X11)/100
=(+) X 121 /100
= 1.21

You just multiply -1.1 by itself... If you want a clearer way of looking at it, note that -1.1=-11*0.1, so -1.1 squared is
[(-11)*0.1]*[(-11)*0.1]=(-11)*(-11)*0.1*0.1=121*0.01=1.21
2008-04-10 6:39 pm
(-1.1)*(-1.1) = 1.21 because you apply this rule ( - )*( - ) = + , ( - )*( + ) = - , ( + )*( - ) = -
it`s like 11*11 = 121
there is no other explanation
2008-04-10 6:38 pm
-1.1 x -1.1 = 1.21
a negative times a negative becomes a postive value

its easier (espeically for algebra) to think of the bracket squared as 2 seperate brackets times eachother

-1.1 = -11/10, and presumably you know that -ve x -ve = +ve:

(-1.1)^2

= -11/10 x -11/10

= 121/100

= 1.21.
