The name "Hong Kong", which literally translates to mean "fragrant harbour", is derived from the area around present-day Aberdeen on Hong Kong Island. This is an area where fragrant wood products and fragrant incense were once traded.[7] The narrow body of water which separates Hong Kong Island from the Kowloon Peninsula is known as Victoria Harbour and is one of the deepest natural maritime ports in the world.

Why is Hong Kong called Hong Kong?
Hong is 香 in Cantonese, meaning fragrant; Kong is 港, meaning harbour.
It is said that this place produced a tree called 香樹, meaning fragrant tree. But this tree no long exists because of frequent felling. So the place still retains the same old name, but because of lacking substance, it is just an empty name

Hong Kong's English name is derived from two Chinese characters, Heung and Gong ("fragrant harbour"). Originally this was only the name of a small settlement near Aberdeen, the main fishing and entry port for pre-colonial Hong Kong Island. Some historians suggest Hong Kong's Chinese name was inspired by its export of fragrant incense.
