For blood group A, the red blood cells carry antigen A on their surface while anti-B antibody is present in plasma. A person who belongs to blood group A can only adopt blood of group A or O.
On a contrary, for blood group B, there are antigen B on red blood cells' surface and anti-A antibody in plasma.
For blood group AB, the red blood cells carry both antigens A and B, and no anti-A or anti-B antibody is produced. Therefore, people of blood group AB is universal recipients. But they can only donate blood to people of the same blood group.
