Better than = for comparison, compare 2 things....
Example: A is better than B

Better to = like an advice
Example: You are better to finish your homework as soon as possible.

Giving is better than receiving.

"better to" 本身是沒有意思的，better是good的比較型(comparative form)，to字便是動詞的基本型(infinitive)的一部份。

better than: 你啱!
one thing is better than the other. That means: A is better than B.
better to, 我只想到用作動詞, 如:
You better to keep this up.
You better not to do this anymore.

Actually there is a difference between better to and better than.

Ex.
You better go out right now, otherwise you're going to be late for school.

You are a better athlete than her.

better than... is kinda like in contrast, compare

better to... is more like a statement, like suggestion (similar to "should")

This is something like contrast (對比,比較)

it's better to watch films at the cinema than at home means that 在家中看電影沒有比在影院看更好...or 在影院看電影比在家中看更好
