Questions like this worry me in that the asker may mean :-

(i) (2r - 6) / 5 = - 2

OR

(ii) 2r - (6/5) = - 2

Just in case, will do both:-
(i)
2r - 6 = - 10
2r = - 4
r = - 2

(ii)
2r - (6/5) = - 2
2r = -10/5 + 6/5
2r = - 4/5
r = - 2/5

I would be interested to know what you did mean !

multipling the equation by 5 gives 10r - 6 = - 10
thus 10r = - 4 and therefore r = - 2/5
2008-04-08 6:13 pm
(2r - 6)/5 = -2
2r - 6 = -10
2r = -10 + 6
2r = -4
r = -4/2
r = -2

2r-6/5=-2
2r=-2+6/5
2r=-10/5+6/5
2r=-4/5
r=-5/4*2
r=-5/2
r=-2/2/1

2r= -2+6/5= -10/5+6/5= -4/5
r= -4/10 = -2/5 answer
Check: 2(-2/5)-6/5= -10/5= -2 checks

r=-2/5
