Tom, Alex and John have $16.8 per person on average. Alex has $17.50 and John has $18.90, how much does Catherine have?

∵ Tom, Alex and John have $16.8 per person on average
∴ They have $16.8 x 3 = $50.4
∵ Catherine is not included in the three people
∴ How much does Catherine have is an unknown number
But ∵ Alex has $17.5 and John has $18.9
∴ Tom have $50.4 - $17.5 - $18.9 = $14
∴ They have $16.8 x 3 = $50.4
∵ Catherine is not included in the three people
