這些都是前置詞即係preposition,主要係用來解釋位置所在.

例如:
on
eg. I go to school on foot.
I go swimming on Sunday.(星期之前)
I work on a bus.(交通工具上)
I live on the fifth floor.(住係幾多樓)
My pen is on the desk.(係另一件物件之上)
My birthday is on the first of July.(係日期之前)
I live on Lantau Island.(住在島上)

in
eg. I live in Hong Kong.(在一個地方上)
I like swimming in Summer.(季節之前)
There is a pencil in my pencil box.(在另一件物件之內)
I was born in 1996.(年份之前)

with
eg. I go to school with Mary.(和某人一起)
I write letter with a blue pen.(用一件工具)
The girl with glasses, is my sister.(身上的一件物件)

of
eg. I am afraid of dogs.(沒解釋,你只可硬記了)
The owner of the canteen is my father.(餐廳的老闆)

In English, preposition does not have any rule, they are normally used by people in the past and therefore nowadays people still using it.

However, sometimes they can be explained :

1. She works on a plane - a plane is a place where people has to get on, therefore we use works on a plane.

2. She works in a hospital - the word in is normally used for a place which is all surrounded, such as a house, a restaurant, a park, therefore here we use she works in a hospital.
