Hi, not only in NY, everywhere in USA also has this veiw in winter. The smoke is from the heat ventilation. American use oil and heat to boil the water making heat in winter. The the heat will pass though pipe for ppls to keep warm. hope it can help you.

紐約有中央蒸氣。發電廠在發電的同時，將發電產生餘熱用作產生蒸氣。蒸氣透過地底管道，供應大廈用作暖氣、或餐廳用作煮食之用。這種系統稱為地區暖氣(District Heating)。發電同時產生可用作暖氣的蒸氣，是一種能提高發電效率的方法。

多數時候，出現坑渠蓋冒煙的情況是因為剛下雨、溶雪或其他原因，引致地下水上升，當升至接獨到中央蒸氣管道時，地下水被加熱至沸騰，便出現坑渠蓋冒煙。

北美東部部份城市亦有相似的中央蒸氣系統。
