It is less, of course... For example, if you have an apple and you divide it in three parts, one part is less than two other ones, isn't it?

One third is less than two third meaning that the object was devided in three parts and if you remove one part from the three you remain with two parts which is bigger than what you have removed.

if denominator is same, then whichever numerator is high that digit will be higher. In you case, since denominator is 3 and same in both case, Hence, one-third will be less than two-third. Here is one example to clear the picture a bit more..

Lets take a digit, say 12

Now, one-third of 12 = 1/3 x 12 = 4
two third of 12 = 2/3 x 12 = 8
Hence 8 > 4
one third < two third

Lets take 1/3. Thats 1 lollypop .
Lets take 2 of Them thats 2/3.
Lets take them ALL thats 3/3 or 1 whole.

1 is smaller than 2 so Then 1/3<2/3.
