Why plants will not take nitrogen in the form of a gas but take it in the form of nitrate ions from the soil?

nitrogen gas is an inert gas which is chemically unreactive.
also, there are no enzymes in plants to convert nitrogen gas into amino acid
or any precursor, so nitrogen gas cannot be uptake.
