When is the last time you listened to the voice of your within? It is probably when you were a kid. But somehow your imagination, compassion and affection disappear now. Indeed, each grown-up has once been the little prince, but the world of grown-ups wouldn’t allow the existence of the little prince. In this sense, will we become the grown-ups we used to dislike?
In the story, the little prince meets a lot of grown-ups during his journey: a king who wants to control others; a conceited man who loves flattering words; a tippler who blinds himself by alcohol; a businessman who cares nothing but profits; a lamplighter who is stuck in his job; and a geographer who shuts himself from the beauty around. All these grown-ups’ focus are themselves, confined and narrow-minded.
What is growing up? Do we gain or lose something during the process? What if we lose our innocence within? Most of us forget the time when we were children. By then we were curious about everything; by then we cared about people and beauty around. By then we asked questions, and were eager to find answers. Nevertheless, very often our growing-up delete these qualities we were born with.
Ostensibly The Little Prince is a book for children, but it poses several profound questions on life and love. The author displays his viewpoints through the conversation between the little prince and the narrator. This tale is initiating to not only kids but adults; the former enjoy the adventure plot while the latter find the philosophical points. As with the happy ending of general fairy tales, The Little Prince sends off a message on everlasting love, which is deeply buried within “people of true understanding”.
