I'm helping my 6 year old with math. I'm lost!! In the quotient 364 devided by 4, they want the number of digits instead of the answer. I'm old & I'm drawing a blank. I need the answer, but I need to know how & why. Many, many more to figure out.
更新1:

The directions say..." Write the number of didgets in each quotient." I know the answer is 91, but I'm afraid that's not what they're after.

note too IT Guy, She goes too a year round school that won a National award for learning, one of six given yearly & the first ever in Nebraska. Grant Elementery, Fremont, Ne.

The number of digits is 2 which you can work out yourself.

But the reason is that the first digit of 364 is 3, which is less than 4.

If you had to divide 500 by 4, your answer would have 3 digits because 5 is bigger than 4.

Say you had to divide 547 by 7. Your answer would be 2 digits. But divided by 3 the answer would be 3 digits.

What about dividing 54673 by 8? answer would be 4 digits because 8 is more than 5. But dividing it by 4 would give a 5 digit answer because 4 is less than 5.

Hope this helps. No need to do all the divisions!

If the quotient after dividing the number by 4 then the number is:
= 364/(1/4)
= 364 * 4
= 1,456

The number of digits then is 4.

Proof:
= 1,456/4
= 364

Talk with some of the other parents with kids in that class. It could be a problem with the teacher not you son. If their kids are not having problems then I would meet with the principal and see if you son can get some extra help. My daughter was having trouble learning to read so was put into a special smaller reading group and that has made all the difference. It could be a learning disability or could be as simple as you son needs a different teaching style than he is getting. A tutor would help with that. It is tough feeling like your are stuck between a rock and hard place but check what resourses are in you school system and in your town, and hang in there - you are a good mom.

It's 9 tens and one unit. Is that what you mean by the number of digits?

This is called partitioning and is commonly used in schools nowadays to teach them place value. I don't know what 3rd grade is because I'm not familiar with the U.S. system, but it seems the right level for a 6 year old to me.

Here is a link that may help. Good luck. Remember, you can always ask the child's teacher. They should encourage you to help at home. It won't be rocket science. Maths hasn't changed - it's just the way that it's presented to the children that's different, and a touch scary for their parents. I should know - I helped my elder son for the last 4 yrs in primary school and got him to the stage where he got into the top class in secondary school.

The number of digits in each quotient: So in 364 the number of digits are 3 (they are 3,6 and 4) and in 4 the number of digits is 1 (this is digit 4). I daubt that they expect that 6 years old know the answer for 364/4, even the number of digits in the result!
So I hope that it is it!
(Sorry for my English, I know it is not quite good!)

91

Just divide 364 into 4
quotient means answer

hope this helps.

When we divide a three digit number by a 1 digit number, the number of digits can only either drop by 1 or remain the same; this is because every one digit number is smaller than 10, and dividing by 10 only makes the number of digits drop by 1. To decide which case we are in, it is enough to ask whether the first digit of the three digit number is larger than the one digit number by which we are dividing or smaller. Since 3 is smaller than 4, the number of digits must drop by 1. Another way of looking at this is to observe that 100 is the smallest three digit number and so 400 is the smallest number that when divided by 4 yields a three digit number. So any three digit number which is smaller than 400 will have a two digit quotient when divided by 4, and any three digit number which is 400 or larger will have a three digit quotient when divided by 4.

Note that this works for numbers of any size: I don't know what 34837275998347272 divided by 4 is, but I can tell you that it is a 16 digit number (the original number has 17 digits, unless I miscounted).

I hope that helps!

You mean to say you have give digits in the quotient with out doing division ?
Take your example
364 ÷ 4 ----the number of digits in the quotient are 2
because see the starting digit in the dividend it is 3 < 4(less than 4) so you have to take first 2 digits for 1st division by 4
so if the first digit in the dividend is less than divisor you get 1 digit less than the number of digits in the dividend
another example
364 ÷ 2 here 3> 2 ( 3 is greater than 2) so digits in the answer will be 3, as you are dividing 3 by 2 you get 1st digit.

similarly 364 ÷ 36 here 3 < 36 and 36 = 36 so digits in the answer is 2
