yes. calcium hydroxide is more desirable than limestone.it is because calcium hydroxide is soluble in water . it will
react with the acidic soil. but the limestone is insoluble
in water.

calcium hydroxide is a weak alkali
it is only slightly soluble in water
CaO is even better than Ca(OH)2 (although it's out of the scope of this question)
