Sonata in E flat Major, No.59Joseph Haydn
Hob. XVI:491732-1809

Joseph Haydn was one of the most prominent composers of the classical period, and is called by some the "Father of the Symphony" and "Father of the String Quartet". Haydn spent most of his career as a court musician, isolated from other composers and trends in music until the later part of his long life.

This E flat major sonata is one of the late compositions by the composer. The opening figure assumes importance as the work progress, with a four note figure near the end of the exposition leading, in the central development section, to a brief cadenza before the final recapitulation, followed by a dominant slow movement. A version of the principal theme in the key of E flat minor was included in the finale, and the original key was re-establishment before the sonata to an end.

A French composer, Franck was intended by his ambitious father for a career as a piano virtuoso, he studied at the Liège and Paris conservatories but found his true vocation only later through organist's appointments in Paris, chiefly that of Ste. Clotilde from 1858, and part-time teaching.

This only and well known Violin Sonata in A Major, written in 1886, which like his symphony, is united by a cyclic use of thematic material that connects the movements. Peace and sense of attainment the fourth and last movement effectively contrasts with the pervious movement. The flowing melody of quarter notes is immediately stated at the start by the piano, which the violin follows in a canon. The two instruments take turns in initiating the canon throughout and the sonata concludes with energetic elegance.
