Dates and timing
The London 2012 bid proposed that the Games take place between Friday 27 July 2012 and 12 August 2012.This was chosen to coincide with the best weather and with school holidays, with the theory being that the demands on the facilities in London would be lower when schools and universities were closed. It would also allow younger people the opportunity to attend the events.

Olympic Zone
The Olympic Stadium, hosting the track and field athletics events as well as the opening and closing ceremonies.
The Aquatics Centre, hosting diving, swimming, synchronised swimming and water polo.
The London Velopark, including a 6,000 seat indoor velodrome for track cycling and a 6,000 seat outdoor BMX racing track.
The Olympic Hockey Centre, with 15,000 and 5,000 seat arenas, hosting the hockey.
Four indoor arenas (Olympic Park Arenas 1-4), hosting basketball, fencing, volleyball, handball, and the fencing and shooting disciplines of the modern pentathlon.

River Zone

ExCel Exhibition CentreThe River Zone featured five main venues in the Thames Gateway area straddling the River Thames:

The ExCeL Exhibition Centre, for boxing, judo, table tennis, taekwondo, weightlifting, and wrestling.
The Millennium Dome and Greenwich Arena, for badminton, basketball, and gymnastics.
Greenwich Park, for equestrianism.
The Royal Artillery Barracks, for shooting.

The Central Zone was formed out of all the remaining venues within Greater London. They are quite widely spread across central and West London:

The new Wembley Stadium for the football finals.
The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club at Wimbledon for tennis.
Lord's Cricket Ground for archery.
Regent's Park for road cycling.Baseball and softball were also due to be hosted in Regent's Park before if was announced in July 2005 that they would be dropped as Olympic events for the London games.
Horse Guards Parade for beach volleyball.
Hyde Park for the triathlon.

The 2012 Summer Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of the XXX (30) Olympiad, are due to be celebrated in London from 27 July to 12 August 2012.


London will become the first city to host the modern Olympic Games three times, having previously done so in 1908 and in 1948.


The 2012 Summer Olympic programme features 29 sports and a total of 39 disciplines. The 2012 Paralympic Games programme has 20 sports and 21 disciplines. London's bid featured 28 sports, in line with other recent Summer Olympics, but the IOC voted to drop baseball and softball from the 2012 Games two days after it selected London as the host city. The IOC reinforced their decision to drop both sports during the Turin Games after they lost votes for reconsideration. They will be Olympic sports for the last time at Beijing in 2008.


The Guardian newspaper reported on 28 October 2005 that open-air swimming disciplines will be added to the Beijing and London Olympic schedules. The paper also reported that women's boxing may be added to London; the IOC confirmed that women's boxing would not be included in Beijing because they "did not feel it merited inclusion in 2008".
