I am an American and have lived in China nearly 15 years now and there is no safer place I would recommend especially for women. I write a little bit about it on my website www.dannysbagel.com/guangzhou China comes with it's frustrations but you never hear of guns or knives, never see graffiti and always see the utmost respect for elders and foreigners. Now pollution is another thing, otherwise enjoy it, it's nothing to worry about.

China is a safe country.

Just stay in hotels/hostels as registered guest and register yourself to US Embassy.

It is a safe country to go to.

People are willing to help etc. and you might find older people (e.g. in their 70s 80s) wanting to "hi" you because they want to learn English. It's all very cute.

Just look after your belongs (wallet/keys etc) when you in busy shopping areas. And don't forget to bargain! =)

Which parts of China are you planning to visit? You will definately need no less than 1 week just for Beijing. This is because the palaces/parks etc each needs about one day to complete - as they are HUGE.

Have fun!

It's safe. As Dan pointed out, little danger of violent crime. However, take Melbourne's advice: beware of pickpockets and the such.

(Addendum: Bleh, cooltron beat me to it =p)

The first answerer (I forgot her name) is a bit paranoid. What goes on between governments stays between governments. Political tensions do NOT affect the lives of foreigners in China.

China is definitely not North Korea. In North Korea, you must watch your every step, and so will the government. In China, you just have to use a bit of common sense. Curse Kim Jong-il in North Korea, and you'll be shot. Curse Hu Jintao (the Chinese president) in China, and you'll be ignored unless you're stupid enough to publish it in a newspaper!

Common dangers are pickpockets and all forms of theft. Violent crimes, rapes etc. are seldom. As long as you really watch your belongings closely you are fairly safe.

What?! Don't do it. We owe them a lot of money. You should be worried about being kidnapped. Seriously. I would highly suggest not going alone. That's just crazy. They are supposed to be our friends, but geeze.......I wouldn't want to take the chance. What would you do if something crazy happened between China and the United States while you were there? That would be like being in N.Korea. Don't do it, it just isn't smart.

can u tall me which is the safest place on earth where women can travel alone in night?????? there are many foreigners residing in india....you think that indian girls don't wear skirts n those tight stuffs....? u hve to change ur mind against these things n take it positively......it is not that all men would harassed u,there are very few,n good people are more in number. if u r traveling in day time there is no problem as no one will dare 2 harasse u and if anybody dare to do that other people around u will take care of it. while travelin in night see to it that u r with a friend or a guide....and try to avoid walkin on road alone or if anyone is not around instead use a taxi.....and always have a helpline no. with you. alwys be strong so that u can handle any situations...
