print to file give only raw print file that is used by printer only.
It is not for human to read it.

You can use a PDF converter to make the prinout into a PDF file.

You can try the free PDF converter named PrimoPDF, which can be downloaded from
http://www.primopdf.com/

After install the software, your PC will have a new printer, when you print to this new printer, a PDF file will be created.

You have not specified from which application you have selected print-to-file option. It could be from Word, Autocad, or anything else. Each application creates a different format for the resulting file.

In general the print-to-file function is destined for the printer. That is to say the file can be "dropped" onto a printer and it will print.

When you drop the printer file to a printer, the current printer model must match the active printer at the time print-to-file function was executed in order that the printer understands the language.
