^ means 'to the power of something'.

e.g. 1)
2^2
= 2 x 2
= 4

e.g. 2)
4^3
= 4 x 4 x 4
= 64

e.g. 3)
16^(1/2)
= √16^1
= √16
= 4

You should be able to go to accerories on you computer and call up a calulator. At that point you get an option under view that lets you go to scientific. Once there, you will see ^2 and ^3, the ^ means the power of, so ^2 is squared and ^3 is to the third power. So if you used the number 2^2 you get 4 or 2 times 2, but if you use ^3 you get 8 or 2 times 2 times 2.
Try it.

Since it`s difficult on here to write it mathematically, we use the "carrot" ( ^), to mean "raised to the power of"

x^2 means "x raised to the power of 2"

this means "raised to the power of ____"

an example:

a^2

a raised to the second power, a raised to the power of two, or a squared.

if it is

a^3

it would be a cubed or a raised to the third power
