3. nope, but i do live in souther california, so there's a good amount of people that speak mandarin and cantonese here
4. more people are learning mandarin due to the growing popularity of big buisness in china. a lot of companies now have offices in shanghai and beijing, so the need to learn mandarin is high in demand. also mandarin would be the language to learn as it is the common language in china as opposed to shanghainese and chantonese, etc.
5.maybe not in the next century but i think in the next 20-50 years it will be more popular. i think the best indication of a language is wether or not it is being taught at the high school level. if it is, then it's a language in demand.
6.all. but mostly for me it is personal. putonghua is the way that i communicate with my parents and especially my grandparents.
