Please tell me what the difference between the phrase of "in the light of" and "in light of" is correct?

Also, which one is correct?

a) A lot of probelms is waiting for you? or
b) A lot of problems are waiting for you?

in the light of something (British & Australian, American & Australian)
if something is done or happens in the light of facts, it is done or happens because of those facts.
Example:
In the light of new evidence he has been allowed to appeal against his prison sentence. In light of what you've just told me, I can understand why you and David were fighting.


in light of something
for the reason given.
Example:
In light of how much our own costs have gone up, we have to raise prices to our customers.
