The Giant Panda has a black-and-white coat. Adults measure around 1.5 m long and around 75 cm tall at the shoulder. Males are 10-20% larger than females.[8] Males can weigh up to 115 kg (253 pounds). Females are generally smaller than males, and can occasionally weigh up to 100 kg (220 pounds). Giant Pandas live in mountainous regions, such as Sichuan, Gansu, Shaanxi, and Tibet.

The giant panda, a black-and-white bear, has a body typical of bears. It has black fur on ears, eye patches, muzzle, legs, and shoulders. The rest of the animal's coat is white. Although scientists do not know why these unusual bears are black and white, some speculate that the bold coloring provides effective camouflage into their shade-dappled snowy and rocky surroundings. The panda's thick, wooly coat keeps it warm in the cool forests of its habitat. Giant pandas have large molar teeth and strong jaw muscles for crushing tough bamboo. Many people find these chunky, lumbering animals to be cute, but giant pandas can be as dangerous as any other bear.

Giant Pandas can usually live to be 20-30 years old in captivity.

In the 1940s the Chinese government began conservation efforts to protect the Giant Pandas. In 1963, the China Research & Conservation Center for the Giant Panda at the Wolong Nature Reserve, Sichuan Province, China was established. Today there are a total of 32 panda reserves, across Southwestern China. A new panda base is currently being established at Bifengxia.
In 1986, the China Research and Conservation Center for the Giant Panda at the Wolong had the first successful captive panda birth. Today it is the premier panda breeding facility in the world. In the last three years there have been 23 births at the Wolong Center.

The nursery at the Wolong Center is staffed 24 hours a day 7 days a week, to care for the newborn pandas, which require feeding every three to four hours. Extensive diaries are kept on each animal. The ratio of staff is one caretaker for every two pandas.

The giant panda is perhaps the most powerful symbol in the world when it comes to species conservation. In China, it is a national treasure, and WWF adopted the panda as its symbol in 1961.
A member of the bear family, giant pandas (Ailuropoda melanoleuca) possess the same digestive system of a carnivore, but they are unique in that they have adapted to a vegetarian diet and eat mostly bamboo. Bamboo contains very little nutritional value, so pandas must eat 12-38 kg a day to meet their energy needs. This leaves them vulnerable to any loss of bamboo habitat – a key threat to their survival.

There are around 720 pandas in the Minshan Mountains and 200-300 pandas in the Qinling Mountains. This is approximately 65% of the wild population, based on the 2004 survey.
