- 4x² - 12x - 16x - 48
- 4x² - 28x - 48
(- 4) (x² + 7x + 12)

FOIL it: -4x^2-12x-16x-48 and combine like terms and you are left with:

-4x^2-28x-48

you use the foil method
-4x^2-12x-8x-48
the simplify it to factor the binominals

(x + 4)(-4x - 12)
= -4x^2 - 16x - 12x - 48
= -4x^2 - 28x - 48

(x+4)(-4x-12) is the same as:

(x * -4x) + (x * -12) + (4 * -4x) + (4 * -12)
-4x^2 - 12x -16x - 48
-4x^2 - 28x - 48

-4x^2-28x-48

okay....
(x+4)(-4x-12)
distribute the x frm the first parentheses to everything in the second...then do the same with the 4
-4x^2-12x-16x-48
combine like terms
-4x^2-28x-48
